Steam Shaped Boomerangs Handmade in Cornwall UK

About Us

I’ve been making and throwing boomerangs most of my life- Everyone I meet when I’m on the beach throwing a boomerang around is always so intrigued by them that I thought it would be fun to start making them for sale- This has now become a full-time occupation which I run from my small workshop here in West Cornwall.

My Boomerangs are made from beautiful hardwoods such as European Ash, American Maple and Cherry as well as more exotic hardwoods like Sapele and Utile, which come from Africa.

after which it is bent into the basic form of the boomerang and left to thoroughly dry out. The next step is to laminate the strips using a strong adhesive, and this is left overnight to cure in the mold under high pressure.

Each mold produces a laminate “master blank”, from which I can cut 5 or 6 individual boomerang blanks.

Next its sanding time! I take each blank and shape it by hand using spoke shaves, planers and sandpaper to achieve the complex wing profile which not only gives the boomerang lift in flight, but also starts it on its return journey back to the thrower!

Once the blank has been shaped, its off down to the beach with a whole bagful of them to test them for flight, then back to the workshop to make any minor adjustments

before applying the logo, stamping and then finishing.

I use a special French blend of natural oils which I rub into the wood to protect and nourish it- these oils also bring out the depth of colour and natural beauty of the woods.

Then I apply multiple coats of varnish which help to protect the boomerang and add some shine to the finished product. A quick polish once they’re dry and they are ready to go!

Living in Cornwall, we are surrounded by beautiful beaches and have grown up immersed in surf culture- these influences come through in the design and look of my boomerangs, which I feel reflect the classic surfboard designs of the 1960s.

I’m proud that this is a completely homegrown product- we produce the packaging and the beach tees and sweats here ourselves too.

About Boomerangs

My father grew up in Australia, and I remember him throwing a boomerang around in our local park one summer when I was young.  As a small boy I was hugely impressed by this, and so began a lifelong fascination with throwing bent sticks at myself..!

Of course, you can make a boomerang by cutting out any piece of plywood and trying to shape the wing profile into it, and these can work pretty good- But for me, the Boomerang is as much about the aesthetic of this simple and natural  form, as it is about developing a profile that will fly well.
